W.E.B. Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. At the time, Du Boisââ¬â¢s family was one of the few black families living in the predominantly Anglo-American town. While in high school, Du Bois showed a big concern for the development of his race. At fifteen years of age, he became the local correspondent for the New York Globe and gave lectures and wrote editorials spreading his ideas that black people needed to politicize themselves. During his three years there, Du Boisââ¬â¢ knowledge of the race problem became more definite and he became determined to help expedite the emancipation of black people. After graduating from Fisk, he entered Harvard on scholarships. He earned his bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in 1890 and immediately began working towards his masterââ¬â¢s and doctorate degree. In 1895, Du Bois became the first African-American to earn a doctorate degree at Harvard University. Career and Later Life After graduating from Harvard, Du Bois took a teaching job at Wilberforce University in Ohio. Two years later he accepted a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania to conduct a research project in Philadelphiaââ¬â¢s seventh ward slums, which allowed him to study blacks as a social system. He was determined to learn as much as he could in an attempt to find the ââ¬Å"cureâ⬠for prejudice and discrimination. His investigation, statistical measurements, and sociological interpretation of this endeavor was published as The Philadelphia Negro. This was the first time such a scientific approach to studying social phenomenon was undertaken, which is why Du Bois is often called the Father of Social Science. Du Bois then accepted a teaching position at Atlanta University. He was there for thirteen years during which he studied and wrote about morality, urbanization, business and education, the church, and crime as it affected Black society. His main goal was to encourage and help social reform. Du Bois became a very prominent intellectual leader and civil rights activist, earning the label ââ¬Å"The Father of Pan-Africanism.â⬠In 1909, Du Bois and other like-minded supporters founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). By the 1930s, the NAACP had become increasingly institutionalized while Du Bois had become more radical, which led to disagreements between Du Bois and some of the other leaders. In 1934 he left the magazine and returned to teaching at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of a number of African-American leaders investigated by the FBI, which claimed that in 1942 his writings indicated him to be a socialist. At the time Du Bois was chairman of the Peace Information Center and was one of the signers of the Stockholm Peace Pledge, which opposed the use of nuclear weapons. In 1961, Du Bois moved to Ghana as an expatriate from the United States and joined the Communist Party. In the final months of his life, he renounced his American citizenship and become a citizen of Ghana.

The Importance Of Verbal And Nonverbal Communication

Many controversies and commands were made which made elections a bit more complicated. We will write a custom essay sample on Voter Participation in the 1800s or any similar topic only for you Order Now The participation in political campaigns and elections in the United States changed between 1815 and 1840 through economic, political, and social factors that corresponds to historical events that made the differences that created the change. The conflicts that are occurring during the time of voting have a very large affect on the election. They show what the president needs to improve and how they are going to act to do so. In the 1820s it was the start of the idea of the American System, which includes promoting industry though tariffs, building road, canals, etc, and internal improvements to market agriculture. The democrats at the time opposed the system and the republicans were all for it. We are fast becoming a great nation, with great commerce, manufactures, population, wealth, luxuries, and with the vices and miseries that they engender. â⬠(Doc. B). This was the start of the market revolution, where everything changes from underdevelopment to a future run on technology. Immigration was a problem because it was replacing American workers with cheaper foreign workers. They didnââ¬â¢t have any solutions, as it was just beginning, so that would be something the president would have to work on and use in thei r campaign. Being the highest executive officer of a modern republic, the president is a imperative position full of demand. Andrew Jackson boosted his reputation and helped prop him to the while house through the Battle Of New Orleans. That is a fine example of how historical events can boost your eligibility for votes. Through the Era of Good Feelings, it kept Monroe and the Republican party well known. Jackson was also in office for the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears which was a horrible time but gained land for the people which increased Jacksonââ¬â¢s favor. Also through Jackson, was he creation of the Whig Party, which was a big impact on the election of 1836 because it was the 2nd party compared to democratic. Van Buren was President for part of the ending of slavery which was a huge progressive state for America. These events explained what the main goals were for the presidential candidates and were the ways to gain votes. In 1828, the Democratic Party ballot only had Repre sentatives to vote on while there werenââ¬â¢t very many competitors. (Doc. D). Social issues kept the public talking, were a major part of campaigning, and displayed who to vote for. In the 1824 election between Adams and Jackson, Adams was blamed for Corrupt bargain which affected his presidency through the thought of scandal. Another point that brought scandal upon election was the spoils system which gave jobs for voters for a certain party. ââ¬Å"We have trusted to the influence of the justice and good sense of our political leaders, to prevent the continuance of.. Abuses, which destroy the natural bands of equality so essential to the attainment of moral happiness, but they have been deaf to the choice of justice.. â⬠(Doc. E). Voting also increased over the years through change of requirement to vote, after this time period, women could vote along with slaves. (Doc. A. ) Campaigns won over Americas heart and started in the 1840s with Martin Van Buren and William Henry Harrison. Harrison was thought of as an alcoholic by his competitor so Buren said that he would sit in a log cabin and drink hard cider. (Doc. I. ) Everyone had a different opinion so newspapers werenââ¬â¢t an official source for awhile. The more different types of newspapers the more different will the stories get stretched with candidates. Doc. G). It was all for means of convincing voters and sharing the ideas of the presidential candidates. Over time, the number of voters increased while the regulations decreased. Through economic, political, and social factors that fact can be explained through historical events and change. Presidents manifest themselves to prove that they can be the best leaders that they can be with hard work and to ugh campaigning. While split up through different parties and ideas, presidency has definitely changed throughout the decades. How to cite Voter Participation in the 1800s, Essay examples

King Richard Iii Commentary free essay sample
Shakespeare presents Richardââ¬â¢s downfall through an unusually resentful tone as well as successfully utilizing certain poetic devices to emphasize the mood and message. The first section, from lines 178 to 182, shows Richardââ¬â¢s state fresh out of his nightmare. Here, he is still processing what had occurred and commenting on his state physically. The first line; ââ¬Å"Give me another horse! Bind up my wounds! â⬠is said by Richard unconsciously as it is his first reaction to the nightmare. This clause actually foreshadows Richardââ¬â¢s situation during the battle at Bosworth where his horse is slain, leaving him at a disadvantage by battling on foot. The usage of exclamation points in this line and also in the next line, ââ¬Å"Have mercy, Jesu! â⬠shows how the effects from the ghostsââ¬â¢ visits still lingered in Richard, causing him to answer in short, bold sentences. This is the first time in the play where he cries out with such fear. We will write a custom essay sample on King Richard Iii Commentary or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In line 179, Shakespeare utilizes (a-pos-si-oh-pee-sis); ââ¬Å"Have mercy, Jesu! ââ¬â Soft, I did but dreamâ⬠. This shows the change in atmosphere as Richard realizes he was only dreaming. The anxious, terror-stricken atmosphere suddenly weakens into a distressed one. He regains full consciousness but the rest of the passage shows how he is not the same confident villain he once was. This can be perceived for the first time in line 180, where Richard accuses his conscience for the unpleasant dreams shown by an apostrophe, personifying his conscience as cowardly. In lines 181 and 182, Richard says ââ¬Å"It is now dead midnight. / Cold, fearful drops stand on my trembling fleshâ⬠. A distressed tone is well set here by utilizing the words ââ¬Å"deadâ⬠, ââ¬Å"coldâ⬠, ââ¬Å"fearfulâ⬠and ââ¬Å"tremblingâ⬠. This creates the dark atmosphere that surrounds Richardââ¬â¢s current condition. This portrays the extent of the fear Richard has experienced in his dream as he uses morbid words. This line also shows how Richardââ¬â¢s fear has not only taken over him inside, but it has also gone to the extent to be revealed on the outside. Throughout the play, Richard has controlled his emotions completely to act as the Machiavel, but this line shows his high confidence deteriorating, exposing the weakness in him. The next section of this passage, from lines 183-193, shows Richard arguing with his conscience after realizing that he himself is the reason of his fear. The tone and the structure changes as Richard starts to question himself while hoping to prove that there is nothing to fear. After carefully analyzing his character, he finally finds that he has become something so sinister that he fears himself. Shakespeare utilizes (hie-pah-for-uh) throughout this section. For example, in line 185, Richard says ââ¬Å"Is there a murderer here? No. Yes, I amâ⬠. First, he answers his question with a flat and distinct ââ¬Å"Noâ⬠but then truthfully contradicts this exclamation with ââ¬Å"Yes, I amâ⬠. He cannot lie to himself about what he truly is as he undeniably knows that he is alone in the room. The troubled questions and short, forceful answers create a very staggered speech showing the hesitation and uncertainty in Richard. In line 192, Richard states that he is now a villain; ââ¬Å"I am a villain. Yet I lie. I am not. â⬠In the beginning speech of Richard III, Richard tells the audience that he will ââ¬Å"prove a villainâ⬠and now, after analyzing himself, he realizes that he has successfully proved himself. But he hesitates, he is uncertain about this acceptance as he tells himself ââ¬Å"Yet I lie. I am notâ⬠. Instead of congratulating himself and gloating about his success, he wants to deny this. This can be compared to Richardââ¬â¢s reaction and character after he successfully deceives Lady Anne into falling in love with him. He was more than proud of his villainy and did not hesitate one second to hide it. His robust, spirited personality is entirely changed in this passage as he now resents the crimes he committed. In the next line, Richard says ââ¬Å"Fool, of thyself speak well. Fool, do not flatterâ⬠which in this clause, Shakespeare utilizes anaphora as well as (an-tith-e-ses) together to get Richardââ¬â¢s message along. So far, from what he has already said, his confidence has obviously dropped dramatically as he continued to look further into his past actions. Therefore, when he says ââ¬Å"Fool, of thyself speak wellâ⬠, he is comforting himself, trying to regain his posture as a villain. But he then balances this phrase out by saying ââ¬Å"Fool, do not flatterâ⬠. The use of antithesis shows Richardââ¬â¢s cunning and undeniably smart character once again as he regulates himself so that he will not go overboard with comforting himself. Also, the use of anaphora on the word ââ¬Å"Foolâ⬠allows the audience to be certain Richard is referring to the same part of his conscience. It also shows how Richard perceives himself at that moment which is vulnerable and weak. But this line altogether shows how Richard is in such a weak state that he goes through the trouble to not only comfort himself, but also to remind himself not to gloat. In the next section (194-200), Richard moves on from arguing with his conscience, to thinking about the crimes he has committed. The section starts with a metaphor comparing his conscience with a creature with several tongues showing that there are many different voices in Richardââ¬â¢s conscience. This line ties in with the next two lines smoothly with the help of (an-uh-dip-lo-sis). The word ââ¬Å"tongueâ⬠is brought up again in the beginning of the next line which is followed by reiterating the word ââ¬Å"taleâ⬠from the end of the last line. These lines also lead to a climax; the tongues of Richardââ¬â¢s conscience all have a tale to tell which overall accuses Richard for a villain. Opposite from the recently mentioned lines, lines 197-199 use epistrophe to emphasize the different ways the word ââ¬Å"degreeâ⬠is used to portray how he is accused of murder and sinned on. This last part of this section displays how Richard knows how people perceive his villainy which he himself finds terrifying. He now understands his guilt which he could not have before his revelation. The last section of this excerpt starts at line 201 and ends at 207. The tone of Richard in this section turns pessimistic as he resides to accepting his misery. He knows that he is genuinely hated and he accepts this. ââ¬Å"There is no creature loves me, / And if I die no soul will pity meâ⬠. Here, Richard clearly states how not even a creature or a soul so much as pities him. He also realizes that he does not even expect pity as he has no pity for himself. This brings to show how Richardââ¬â¢s insensitivity has come back. He is slowly regaining his posture as an apathetic villain. Finally, the re-hardened Richard comes to full play in the last few lines (from 205-207) of this passage which is shown through its stable structure. ââ¬Å"Methought the souls of all that I had murdered / Came to my tent, and every one did threat / Tomorrowââ¬â¢s vengeance on the head of Richardâ⬠The speech is ot once broken and he confidently dictates it in full comprehensive sentences displaying the full recovery of Richard as the machiavel. This passage gives the audience the final hint that Richardââ¬â¢s downfall is unavoidable. Even though he did recover from his largest obstacle, back to the strong and confident villain he once was, it was in-ev-it-able for this scene to be fully forgotten. Richardââ¬â¢s speech in this scene displays the ultimate breakdo wn of his fearless character which takes part of molding his future in the play.

Teen smoking essays
Teen smoking essays Teen smoking. Those two words mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. To some it means nothing. They are just two meaningless words found under T and S in the dictionary. To others it is as if these words symbolize some sort of treason or crime against society. Yet to others it is just another stereotype to be placed under. And to some it is a salvation. An escape. Unfortunately I am writing this paper so you will get my positions on teen smoking rather than other peoples. Teen smoking gathers a lot of emotions when I think about it. It makes me very angry sometimes. My first draft of this was good but I saw myself getting angry and lashing out on everyone, so I revised it. But enough of that, I find teen smoking to be a very controversial subject. To be completely honest with you I am smoking right now as I am writing this. Obviously I am a smoker. I am 17 years old and I am a smoker. In the late 1990s, the statistics showed that approximately 25% of teens smoke. Thats one out of every four teenagers. High school is a tough time for teens. These years are critical to a teens future. This explains why a vast majority of smokers start at 16 years or younger with the most common age being 14 years old(freshman). It has also been proven also that teens who score lower in school smoke more than higher scoring students do. It seems that everyone smokes in our school. Our school is overrun with smokers. It is right now at least 50% smokers and 65% if you count the people who will smoke before their high school career is up. We practically encourage it. I mean Firemans Field practically condones teen smoking. Teen smoking is defiantly a problem in our school, as well as schools all over the United States. I feel that teen smoking is a huge problem. I feel that too many teenagers smoke cigarettes. It is something that needs to get dealt with. But before I get into that I should probably start with the causes ...

Re-Educating Health Care Providers on Hand Hygiene Practice Essay
Re-Educating Health Care Providers on Hand Hygiene Practice - Essay Example Hospital Acquired infections (HAIs) present a serious challenge in provision of healthcare services to patients in hospital settings. Studies indicate that about 80 percent of patients who contract HAIs often succumb to the diseases and die while receiving treatment in the hospital (Ivers, et al. 2012). The numbers have since risen up and it has become increasingly difficult for researchers to point to the exact numbers of patients suffering from HAIs. Nevertheless, existing literature has produced a lot of evidence pointing to the role of hand hygiene practices in reducing the rates of HAIs. However, compliance rates to hand hygiene practices such as hand washing and gelling remain low, which makes it difficult to prevent HAIs. There is also a gap in available literature concerning the impact of specific hand hygiene programs in reducing the rates of HAIs. This project assesses how reeducation can enhance compliance to hand hygiene in hospital settings thereby reducing the rates of HAIs. Hand hygiene encompasses various technics and practices for cleansing hands before and after treating patients. Several agents such as antiseptic agents, anti-microbial soaps, alcohol based rubs, plain soaps, and antiseptic agents play a critical role in hand hygiene practices. The main underlying factor is that compliance with hand hygiene practices reduces the rates of related infections to a greater extent (Ivers, et al. 2012). However, inadequacies exist in the literature available regarding how to increase compliance with hand hygiene practices before and after attending to each patient according to the guidelines stipulated by the WHO (Dennison & Prevost, 2012).
